Everett Wellington Henderson

September 16, 1909 – January 14, 1999

Everett Wellington Henderson died on January 15, 1999, in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Born in Atoka, Oklahoma on September 16, 1909, he was the son of Benjamin M. and Pearlie Baker Henderson. After completing the 8th grade at the New Hope rural school he enrolled in Perry high school. Everett was an outstanding athlete, participating in both football and wrestling. He had the distinction of winning second in the 1930 state inter-scholastic meet at Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Between his junior and senior years in high school he signed up for the Perry National Guard Unit, Battery C 158th field artillery and attended summer camp. In 1930 the Guard, in preparation for summer camp, staged a series of boxing matches to raise funds to be used as a mess fund while the men were in camp at Ft. Sill. Everett competed in a feature match. The event was such a hit that he competed in multiple local boxing and wrestling events. The Perry Daily Journal described him as “the rugged wrestler and boxer of Perry.”

On January 5, 1937, Everett and Catherine “Katie” Harviel were married. They made their home in Oklahoma City and were blessed with three children. He worked for the WPA and various jobs. Catherine died in 1996.

Following Catherine’s death he married Earnesteen Henderson, who also predeceased him in 1997.

Survivors include his children: Valerie Ann, Vincent, and Harold.

Burial was at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid, Oklahoma.
