J. C. “Pinky” Wood, 97, of Ponca City, Oklahoma died Thursday, March 7, 1996, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Ponca City.

Born in Lee’s Summit, Missouri on April 21, 1898, he was the son of John Crow “J. C.” Wood, Sr. and Mary F. “Mollie” (Lawrence) Wood. The family moved to Perry when was two years old. He graduated from Perry high school and was a veteran of World War I.

He and Willie Ruth Bell were married in Ponca City on June 1, 1922. They made their home in Ponca City, where he was employed by Marland Oil Company and Continental Oil Company for 42 years. From 1939-1982, he was an agent for State Farm Insurance.

Wood was a member of the First United Methodist church and the Bible Voyagers class. He was a 66-year member of the American Legion and also held membership in First Families of Noble County, Isaac Walton League, Ponca City Country Club, and Westminister Village.

Preceding him in death were: his wife, Willie, on Jan. 19, 1985; his parents; and three brothers.

Survivors include: his daughter, Frances Thompson of the home; several nieces and nephews, including Jane Mosbaugh Cohen, Albuquerque, NM, who lived in the Wood home as a child; one cousin; and one grandson.

Rev. Denny Hook and Rev. James Barge officiated at funeral rites held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Methodist church in Ponca City. Burial was in the IOOF cemetery at Ponca City. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
