Verna Shappell might well be classed as one of the leaders at Perry high school, having served as student director of the senior class play this year. The 17-year-old -girl has also been a member of the Maroon band, the student council, Y-Teens, and the Perryscope staff, Miss Shappell, No. 9 Highland drive, was born in Roxana, Okla., and has attended schools in Orlando and Perry. She plans to take a job after graduating from PHS.

Verna Belle Smith, age 71, of Crescent, OK, was born on July 3, 1932, in Marshall, OK, to Marion and Mary Shappell. She died Sunday, December 21, 2003, in Crescent.
She is survived by her husband Bill of the home; one daughter, Debbie and husband, Carl Crane of Earlsboro, OK; three sisters, Rose Mary St. Clair and Evelyn Coe, both of Perry, and Delores Myers, Morrison; two grandsons, Patrick and Christopher Boles; one great granddaughter, Christina Boles; one sister-in-law, Hester and husband Bob Gooch of Guthrie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Billie Teresa Smith.
Funeral services will be held at Smith Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2003, with Rev. Terry Martindale officiating. Burial will be at Summit View Cemetery.
