Fred Eugene Dennis

August 31, 1889 – April 14, 1972

Funeral services for Fred E. Dennis, a long-time Clovis, New Mexico attorney, are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Central Christian Church with Dr. Stanley Letcher Jr. officiating. Mr. Dennis, 82, died at about 4 p.m. Friday at the Clovis Memorial Hospital.

Masonic graveside services will be held at Mission Gardens Cemetery. Steed-Todd Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mr. Dennis was born August 31, 1889, in Kansas, to Charles and Emma Dennis. He graduated from Perry high school in 1908 and came to Clovis with his family. In 1912 he married Ethyl Smiser in Oklahoma and then returned to Clovis in 1913 to practice law.

He graduated from the University of Kansas Law School and at the time of his death was the oldest living member of the Curry County Bar Association. He was also a member of the New Mexico and American Bar Associations.

Mr. Dennis was a member of the Central Christian Church and Clovis Masonic Lodge No. 40, as well as other Masonic bodies, including Shrine. He was past exalted ruler of Clovis Elks Lodge No. 1244 and was a member of Clovis Rotary Club with perfect attendance for over 30 years.

During World War II, Mr. Dennis was stationed in Albuquerque as the chief legal officer of the Office of Price Stabilization.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Aug. 3, 1970.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Charles Lantz of Midland, Tex.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Steve Hinton and Jamice Lantz, both of San Louis Obispo, Calif.; and one brother, Dr. Howard Dennis of Palm Springs, Calif.
