Mary Louise (Bowles) Maughan

July 12, 1912 – May 25, 2001

Mary Louise Bowles Maughan of Jones-Harrison Residence in Minneapolis, formerly of Wayzata and Minnetonka died May 25, 2001.

Mary was born July 12, 1912, in Perry, Oklahoma, the youngest child of Judge William Bowles and Clara Schrader Bowles. She was a graduate of Perry high school in 1928 and Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri.

She was the widow of David Charles Maughan, her loving husband of 61 years, who predeceased her in July 1996.

Blessed with an elegant contralto voice, she enriched the musical tradition of St. Stephen’s Church, Edina, with her participation as soloist and member of the choir. She was a long-standing member of St. Stephen’s and participated in several activities there, attending faithfully until a few years ago.

Mary cherished and cultivated beauty in all things. She was a skillful gardener and also enjoyed needlework and bridge. She participated in activities of the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis, of which she was a 50-year member.

Mary was a fond and devoted friend and loving wife, and will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, graciousness and dignity.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Maughan Powell of Nantucket, Massachusetts and two grandsons, Charles Powell of Los Angeles and Philip Powell of Seattle.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 2:30 pm, in the Chapel of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 50th & Wooddale, Edina. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, PO Box 39, Chanhassen, MN 55317 or donor’s choice.
