Dr. John Stephen Chaffin

Class of 1965

Dr. John Chaffin, a heart-and-lung transplant surgeon and chief of the cardiovascular surgery department at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, graduated with honors from PHS and earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma.

He had a research and clinical fellowship in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Boston, Massachusetts, and served as a visiting professor of surgery in Istanbul, Turkey.

John, a Vietnam War veteran, received the Combat Medical Badge, Bronze Star with Valor, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. For the American Heart Association, he has been Man of the Year and Corporate Volunteer of the Year. He has published many medical papers and is widely known for his understanding of the intricacies regarding organ transplants.

John’s father was Everett Chaffin, the Vocational Agriculture teacher at PHS for more than 20 years and an Honor Roll Teacher inductee.
