Dr. Eugene Benedict Ley

August 18, 1914 – March 11, 1999

Dr. Eugene Benedict Ley, 84, died in Florence, Colorado, on March 11, 1999.

Born August 18, 1914, in Perry, Oklahoma, he was the son of Gustavas and Katherine (Ward) Ley. He graduated from Perry High School in 1932 and continued his education at the University of Oklahoma for both his undergraduate degree and medical school.

He completed his internship at the University of Colorado Medical School, Denver, Colorado, and general surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

On June 17, 1940, he and Marie Barbara Tabar were married in Detroit. She preceded him in death in 1987 after 47 years of marriage.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 in Dallas and San Antonio, Texas, before beginning his practice in general surgery in Pueblo, Colorado. In 1969 he moved to Canon City, Colorado.

He retired in 1980.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his wife, were three grandchildren, one brother, and one sister.

A memorial mass was held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Canon City, with a private family interment of cremated remains.
