Frances M. (Zumwalt-Choat) Thurnau

November 19, 1913 – September 28, 1990

The owner of Frances’ Beauty Shop, Mrs. Thurnau, 76, died Friday, Sept. 28, 1990, at Edmond Hospital in Edmond.

She was born Nov. 19, 1913, in Chattaneuoga, Oklahoma, to Arthur and Lola (Floyd) Zumwalt. Mrs. Thurmau grew up in Perry and attended school at Red Rock and Perry High School, where she graduated in 1932.

She was married twice.

She married Albert W. Babcock on March 25, 1934, in Cleveland, Okla. The couple moved to Stillwater in 1934 where she was a homemaker and beautician. She worked for several years at the Aggiette Beauty Shop before opening her own shop on Lewis Street in 1944. He died in 1954. She retired in 1967.

She married Clarence Thurnau in January 1972 in Shelton, Wash. The couple lived in Washington for a short time, before coming to Stillwater in 1973, where she lived until her death. He died in 1979.

Mrs. Thurnau was a member of the First Baptist Church. She belonged to the American Association of Retired Person and the Widow-to-Widow Group, and was a former member of the Christian Women’s Club.

Survivors include one son, Norman Babcock of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Carolyn) Elledge of Ripley; one granddaughter, Lee Ann Belinger; four great-grandchildren; and one brother Ellsworth Choat of Duncan.

She was predeceased by her parents, both husbands and one brother, Horace Zumwalt.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Strode Chappel with internment at Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater.
