Essie Lucinda (Freeman) McCleery

December 29, 1894 – November 25, 1979

Essie F. McCleery, 84, widow of Capt. Howard R. McCleery, of 18 Chester St., Hudson, New Hampshire, died November 25, 1979.

Born December 29, 1894, in Pickens County, S.C., she was the daughter of James Barney Ross Freeman and Amanda Elkins (Harris) Freeman-Johnson. After her graduation from Perry High School in 1914, she attended Oklahoma A & M University and taught at the Lone Elm School near Perry.

In September 1920, she and Captain Howard R. McCleery, also a Perry High School graduate, were married at the First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, S.C. Howard and Essie made their first home at Cape Haitian and returned to the States where he continued to serve in the Dental Corps of the United States Navy. He predeceased her in 1975.

Mrs. McCleery was a member of the Presbyterian Meeting House.

Surviving her are daughter Mrs. Wallace F. (Thaylia) Buttrick, Nashua, N.H., and three grandchildren.

Burial will be at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
