Erna Helene (Schachinger) Rief

June 10, 1914 – March 18, 2013

Erna Helene Rief died on March 18, 2013, in Macomb, Michigan.

Born in Germany in 1914, she was the daughter of Adam and Olga (Ziebart) Schachinger. When Erna was just 11 years old she lived through Russian soldiers invading the family home. Her family was forced to flee their home in Germany. She grew up very cultured in her homeland. In 1925 her family came to America. They settled in Oklahoma and lived on a beautiful farm. Erna was off the farm to continue her education.

Mrs. Rief was a strong and intelligent woman. She completed her high school degree at Perry High School in 1932 and went on to complete college. Erna Rief spoke fluent German and her English, both spoken and written, were impeccable.

She was devoted to her church, Hope Community Baptist Church, in Sterling Heights, Michigan. She has been active in many areas of the church including the choir. Her church has been a place of prayer and lifelong friendships.

Mrs. Rief was predeceased by her dear husband, Reinhold. Mr. and Mrs. Rief grew up together in Germany. They were married in the states. When they were first married they made their home in Detroit. For over 30 years they have lived in Macomb Township.

Erna is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

The funeral service will take place on Friday, March 22, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Community Baptist Church, 42259 Hayes Road, Sterling Heights, Michigan, with Rev. George Johnson officiating.
