John Josiah Gibbens
April 7, 1886 – November 18, 1935
John J. Gibbens, Sr., 49, former assistant superintendent of the Allouez (Mich.) Mining Co., who had been an invalid for many years, died Monday at his home, 1104 S. Thirty-second St. He moved to Milwaukee from Allouez 13 years ago.
Born April 7, 1886, in Oberlin, Kansas, he was the son of Edward Everett and Jessie Olive (Murphy) Gibbens. The family came to Oklahoma shortly after the run of 1889. He and his sister, Hortense, graduated from Perry High School in 1904.
After spending a few years in New Mexico and Arizona, he moved to Michigan, where he continued his education. He was a graduate of the Michigan College of Mines, Houghton, Mich., and an honorary member of Tau Beta Phi fraternity.
John and Nellie Arnold Peterson were married July 5, 1915, in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.
He was a Mason and attended the Fourth Baptist church.
Survivors are his wife, Nell, and two sons, John J., Jr., and David D. Gibbens, all of Milwaukee. His father, two brothers, and a sister, none living in Milwaukee, also survive.
Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park after funeral services at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Voth & Anderson chapel, 2427 W. National Ave.
