Billie Joe Chenoweth

December 31, 1928 – October 14, 2023

Billie Joe Chenoweth, 94, was the youngest of 10 children of Clark B. and Anna E. Christensen Chenoweth. He was born December 31, 1928, in Perry, Oklahoma, and passed away from this life on October 14, 2023.

Bill, a longtime resident of Perry, was a 1947 graduate of Perry High School. He was a member of the wrestling team and U.S. Navy Reserves. After high school he worked at the Savmor Service Station until he was called up for military duty.

A veteran of the United States Navy, Bill served his country in the Korean War. He was a member of the Seabees and was sent to Korea and to the coast of Pusan. Bill built airbases in Korea and worked in the machine shop until the truce was signed ending the war in 1953.

Upon returning from the war, Bill married Roberta Brandenburg in 1954. Following the marriage, he spent time living in Oklahoma, where he attended Okmulgee Technical School, learning trades in both machinery and diesel mechanics.

Bill worked and lived in Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico before returning to Perry in the 1960s. They welcomed their son Scott in 1968.

Residing in Perry, Bill purchased The Globe building on the west side of the downtown square and opened Bill’s Trading Post, selling antique furniture and household appliances. He ran the business for nearly 30 years. Upon his “retirement,” Bill continued to buy and trade, enjoying every day.

In 1994, Bill met his companion Lois Cox at a Morrison dance. They both enjoyed music and liked dancing, traveling, and each other’s company. Their partnership lasted until Bill’s passing.

Bill enjoyed being a grandfather to his grandson Sebastian and granddaughter Savannah. He enjoyed family dinners and watching both participate in sporting events.

Bill valued his friends and family. He enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and dominoes with friends, visiting auctions, garage sales and tinkering until the end.

Bill is survived by his son Scott Chenoweth and wife Sage, and grandchildren Sebastian Chenoweth and Savannah Chenoweth, of Perry, OK, and companion/caregiver Lois Cox of Perry, OK. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters, Star Chenoweth, Edd Chenoweth, Luella Chenoweth (Ewy) Gregg, Dorothy Chenoweth Ewy, Clark (Click) Chenoweth Jr., Libby Chenoweth Norton, Gladys Chenoweth Meier, Vira (Bobby) Chenoweth Horton, and Mary Chenoweth Goodwin.

Funeral services will be held at Brown Dugger Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 18, at 10 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Grace Hill Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Wheatheart Nutrition Center, Senior Citizens Center, and the Grandparents Club.
