May 26, 1937 – April 17, 2024

Dale Ace Madden, age 86, of Maupin, Oregon, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

Born on May 26, 1937, in Lucien, Oklahoma, he was the son of Fred and Essie Madden. He and three siblings were raised on a farm in Lucien, Oklahoma. He attended White school, west of Perry, and graduated from Perry High School.

Mr. Madden attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie where he studied food science, which was to become his life-long career. During college, Mr. Madden was a wrestler as well as a rodeo bull rider.

In 1964, he moved to Portland for work, and eventually raised three daughters on the boundary of Portland and Beaverton.

He teamed up with partners to invent the first all-natural stabilizing product for dairy, which was used mostly in yogurt, buttermilk, and other dairy products prone to spoiling. He also focused on creating flavorings for ice cream. He worked closely with ice cream manufacturers Tillamook, Umpqua, Alpenrose, Dairygold, Eberhard, and Sunshine dairies. He also worked with Nancy’s Yogurt and Wonder Kombucha. He only retired from selling flavorings to ice cream manufacturers three years ago, having been reluctant to stop taking care of his long-time clients. He and his partner in flavor creation, Bud Haxby, were so respected by the dairy industry that they were regular judges at the annual product evaluations hosted by Oregon Dairy Industries.

In his spare time, Mr. Madden was an avid fly angler. One of the accomplishments he was most proud of was catching a Permit on his first outing — an incredibly challenging saltwater fish to catch on a fly. Dale spent the next 40 years trying to catch another.

He also landed a 100-pound Tarpon, which he fought for two hours in 95-degree heat with 90 percent humidity. It is reported that it took two days for Mr. Madden to recover. For over 30 years Mr. Madden fished the Deschutes Salmonfly hatch in the spring and the Steelhead run in the fall.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Carol (Madden) Barton, and brother, Kenneth Lee Madden.

Dale is survived by his daughters Heidi Patarozi, Heather Longfield, and Stacy Madden, and his sister Ada Jean (Madden) West.

A memorial service for Dale Madden will be held June 15 at Maupin, Oregon.
