Barton Russell (Merrill) Gilbert

Barton Russell Gilbert, 64, of Downey, California, died in Lynwood, California, on June 13, 1971.

Born in Oklahoma on July 19, 1906, she was the daughter of Ambrose and Elinor Amelia Pate Merrill. After her graduation from Perry high she accepted a position with the Arthur Johnston insurance company in Perry and continued her education by completing a full teachers course in the Perry Business college. In June, 1928, she moved to Bowie, Texas, for three weeks of training with the Bailey Business college before assuming the position as district organizer for the American Business college. She worked to establish business colleges in Seymour, Texas, Elk City, Watonga, and Kingman and Pratt, Kansas.

In 1931, after moving back to Perry, Barton was appointed by the Noble County Commissioners as assistant/stenographer to the County Attorney and served in this capacity during the administration of three county attorneys. In 1937 she was granted a six week’s leave of absence from her duties as assistant to the Noble county attorney to work at the Oklahoma State Capital for the attorney general. After the six weeks, Barton accepted a position at the State Capital and moved to Oklahoma City.

On June 19, 1940, she and Isaac O. Gilbert were married at the Lincoln Terrace Christian church in Oklahoma City, OK. The couple made their home in Yukon, followed by Norman, OK. In October, 1944, while living in Norman, the couple was blessed with a daughter, Eve Amelia. The family lived in Texas and California.

Survivors include her husband, Isaac; daughter, Eve Amelia Luker of Artesia, California; one grandchild; and sister, Mrs. G. V. Humphreys of Oklahoma.

Services will be Wednesday, June 16, 1971, at 2:00 p.m. at Moreland’s Mortuary Chapel, Lynwood California. Interment will be at Park Lawn Memorial Park in Commerce, California.
