October 23, 1896 – March 28, 1979
Mary K. Hayes, 82, died March 28, 1979, at the St. Peter Hospital, in Olympia, Washington.
Born in Perry, Oklahoma on October 23, 1896, she was the daughter of John F. and Martha J. “Mattie” Swan Tate. Her family moved to Perry from Colorado in May, 1896, because her father accepted a position as superintendent of schools. Following her graduation from Perry high in 1916, she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and worked as a secretary for a clothing store.
On February 7, 1927, she and Thomas Dewitt Hayes were married in Olathe, Kansas. Thomas worked as an electrician for the Frisco Rail Road. The couple were blessed with a son, Edwin Lowell Hayes, in 1936.
Although Mary lived most of her life in Kansas City, Missouri, after her husband’s death in November 1964, she moved to the Dash Point area of Tacoma, Washington, where she lived for three years, and to Olympia for the last five years of her life.
Survivors include: her son, Edwin, of Olympia; a brother, Kenneth Tate of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one sister, Mildred Mason of Perry, Okla.; and one grandson.
A funeral service will be held in Kansas City next week. The family suggests memorial donations may be made to Sound Home Health Service in Olympia.
