Sarah Elizabeth (Greathouse) Palmer

Sarah Elizabeth “Bessie” Palmer died in Dewey, Oklahoma in October, 1987.
Born in Kansas on October 24, 1903, she was the daughter of Vergil Anderson and Lucy F. Jones Greathouse. Her mother died when she was 15 and she came to live with her aunt, Mrs. Orlando (Verna) Walkling, for her senior year. Sarah graduated from Perry high in 1924 and immediately enrolled for summer school at the teacher’s college in Emporia, Kansas. Her teaching career began in the 1924-25 academic year at Prairie Center, Kansas. During her 1925 summer break, she attended Oklahoma A. & M.
On June 2, 1926, she and Benn Glennester Palmer, a teacher at the Lily rural school near Red Rock, were married. They taught in a multitude of places in Oklahoma and raised a family of two sons and three daughters.
After the children were grown, Sarah enrolled at the Northeastern State College in Talequah, Oklahoma and graduated with a B. S. in education.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; two sons, Glenn Palmer and Gene Palmer; three daughters, Bennretta (Palmer) Miller, Loretta (Palmer) Applegate, and Elizabeth “Betty” (Palmer) Hinshaw.
Burial was at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
