Gladys Mae (Chenoweth) Meier

May 3, 1922 – May 18, 2001

Gladys Mae Meier, 79, of Modesto, California, died Friday at her home.

Born in Fellows, California, on May 3, 1922, she was the daughter of Clark Braden and Anna Elizabeth Christensen Chenoweth. Following her graduation from Perry high school in 1942, she enrolled at the National Youth Administration master shop in Enid, Oklahoma, where she received training to work for the war industry plants. In October, 1942, she reported for employment at the Failing Supply company. In September 1943, Gladys, her sister, and two friends, set off to Wichita to apply for work in a defense plant.

She succeeded finding work and, while in Wichita, met an air corpsman who was in training. On February 13, 1945, she and Paul Emanuel Meier were married in Corvallis, Oregon. He was stationed in Guam and discharged a year later. They made their home in Corvallis for a number of years before moving to Modesto, California, in 1951.

She worked for Tri Valley Growers for 10 years. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Modesto.

Survivors include: her husband, Paul Meier of Modesto; children, Wade J. Meier and Jill Gibson, both of Modesto, and Barry Meier and Danny Meier, both of Sacramento; four brothers, all of Oklahoma; and five sisters, all of Oklahoma.

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California.
