LaWanna Lou (Estes) Galaway

June 13, 1927 – September 26, 2000

LaWanna Lou Galaway, age 73, died September 26, 2000, at Pond Creek, Oklahoma.

Born in Nash, Oklahoma, on June 13, 1927, she was the daughter of John George and Odessa Howard Estes.

On August 19, 1944, she and classmate, William Phillip “Phil” Galaway, were married at the First Baptist Church in Gainsville, Texas. In April, 1945, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. Both Phil and LaWanna graduated in May, 1945, however, Phil’s diploma was awarded in absentia.

Following his discharge from the Navy in June, 1946, the couple made their home in Perry and celebrated the birth of a daughter. In 1949 the family moved to Pond Creek, where Phil owned and operated a grocery business, before going to work for the United States Postal Service in 1974. Phil preceded her in death in 1987.

Survivors include: one daughter, Linda Schmitz-Herod, Pond Creek; a foster son, Jack LaFay, Johnson, Kansas; two grandchildren, and two foster grandchildren.

Burial will be at the Pond Creek cemetery, Pond Creek, Oklahoma.
