William Phillip “Phil” Galaway

William Phillip “Phil” Galaway, 60, died November 24, 1987, at his home at Pond Creek.
Born at Bartlesville, April 21, 1927, he was the son of Horrace Clifton and Ada Phillips Galaway.
On August 19, 1944, he and classmate, LaWanna Lou Estes, were married at the First Baptist Church in Gainsville, Texas. In April, 1945, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. Both Phil and LaWanna graduated from Perry high school in May, 1945, however, Phil’s diploma was awarded in absentia.
Following his discharge from the Navy in June, 1946, the couple made their home in Perry and celebrated the birth of a daughter. In 1949 the family moved to Pond Creek, where Phil began a grocery business. He also worked for the United States Postal Service since 1974 and was a rural carrier at Nash.
Phil was a member of the First Christian church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion post 199, the Pond Creek Chamber of Commerce, Lions club and AF&AL Masonic lodge No. 125. He was a retired firefighter and in 1979 was named Pond Creek Citizen of the Year.
Survivors include his wife, LaWanna, of the home; one daughter, Linda Schmitz, Pond Creek; a foster son, Jack LaFay, Johnson, Lanas; his mother, Ada Galaway, Perry; one brother, H. C. Galaway, Oklahoma City; one sister, Barbara Criswell, Farmington, N. M.; two grandchildren and two foster grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Christian church of Pond Creek. Rev. E. A. Butler and Rev. Robert Schreiner will officiate. Burial will be at the Pond Creek cemetery. Memorial may be made to the Garfield County Hospice
