Gloria Yvonne Jones leaves Perry high school with an active record behind her. She plans to begin study of household arts next fall at Oklahoma A. & M. college. She is the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Jones, 1314 Holly street. Yvonne was born in Hobart, Oklahoma on November 20, 1932, and has attended schools at Hobart, Harrah, and Perry. Among her school activities are football queen candidate, 1946-47; wrestling queen candidate, 1946-47; basketball queen candidate, 1946-47; student council, 1947-50, student council treasurer, 1949-50, Teen Town council, 1948-50, Teen Town treasurer, 1949-50, drill leader of the Red Hots, 1948-49, cheerleader of the Red Hots, 1949-50, junior play, 1948-49, annual play, 1948-49, annual staff, 1948-50, and senior play, 1949-50.

Gloria “Yvonne” (Jones) McElroy

November 20, 1932 – December 22, 2001

Yvonne McElroy, 69, a resident of Napa, California, died Dec. 22, 2001, at a local hospital

Born in Stillwater, Oklahoma on November 20, 1932, she was the daughter of Hugh Derold and Pauline Hartzog Jones. Following her graduation from Perry high in 1950, she continued her education at Oklahoma A. & M. college in Stillwater and pledged Pi Beta Phi. On her first summer break she moved to Oklahoma City where she found employment as a decorator in a fashion shop. In 1952 she was selected as a member of the Orange and Black Quill, an honorary scholastic organization for sophomore girls at Oklahoma A. & M. While attending college she accepted employment as a saleslady at the Perry Jewelers. She graduated in 1954.

On October 3, 1954, she and Buel McElroy, Jr. were married at the First Methodist church in Stillwater, Oklahoma. They made their home in Stillwater until 1956 when they moved to California. Buel accepted a position with May Company and they lived in North Hollywood and in Napa. They were blessed with three children. After 47 years of marriage, Buel McElroy, Jr. passed away in 1997.

Yvonne was a boutique owner in California for 15 years.

Survivors include: her daughter, Shawn McElroy-Hill of Salt Lake City, Utah; her sons, Brice McElroy of North Hollywood, and Steven McElroy of St. Helena; and her mother, Polleye Jones of Yountville. She is also survived by her three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Grace Episcopal Church in St. Helena, 1314 Spring St., St. Helena, California with Father William J. Mcllmoyl officiating.
