Raymond Dean Sloan, 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Sloan, 735 Grove street, has been a member of the Future Farmers of America since 1950. He was born Dec. 13, 1936, in Perry and participated in wrestling while in high school. Raymond is undecided about what he will do following graduation from high school.

Raymond Dean Sloan, 84, died Tuesday September 22, 2020 at his home in North Carolina.

Born in Perry, Oklahoma on December 13, 1936, he was the son of the late William and Minnie Marie Mellies Sloan. Following his graduation from Perry high school in 1943, he attended Oklahoma A. & M. for two years with a major in agriculture.

In May, 1956, Raymond was inducted into the U. S. Army. He proudly served in the Korean War. He served as a team leader for “C” company, 2nd battle group, 3rd Infantry and was selected as “soldier of the month” in November, 1959. The selection was made on his dependability, character, and conscientious performance of duty. The unit was part of the 7th Infantry “Bayonet” division, one of two highly trained American combat divisions which remained in Korea after the war to assist the Republic of Korea troops in keeping their country free from Communist invasion.

He and Betty Lou Bumgarner were married in August, 1960. The couple settled in North Carolina where Raymond retired from Snyder Paper Corporation.

Raymond was an avid Team Roper and loved all things outdoors.

Preceding him in death were: his wife Betty in 2016; daughter Brenda Kay Sloan; brother, William Sloan; and sisters Vada Johndrow and Vivian Gibson.

Survivors include: his children, Rick Davis (Dianne), Revonda Curtis (Lee), Kathy Graves (Don), Ray Sloan (Renee), Ranea Brantley (Chad); nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sister Joyce Sutherland; and brother Leo Sloan (Mary).

The family will have a private ceremony at Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, North Carolina on October 9, 2020. A Celebration of Life for both Raymond and Betty Sloan will be held for family and friends on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 2pm at Brantley Farm in Marshville, NC.
