Born in Welch, Oklahoma on April 24, 1939, she was the daughter of John Orlan and Geraldine Oreitha (Wilson) Lemler. Following her graduation from Perry high school in 1957, she continued her education at the University of Oklahoma. As a junior at Oklahoma University she qualified for the national fencing meet in New York by winning a district title for women at Denton, Texas. In 1960 she also received the Ima Reaves award as the outstanding woman in physical education at the university. She graduated with a teaching degree and shortly thereafter went to Sandy, Oregon to serve for her third summer as waterfront director for the swim program for a large Camp Fire Girls camp.

Jean Ann began her teaching career with the Portland, Oregon public schools. She started at Roosevelt High School in 1961 before moving to Lincoln High School, where she spent the last 26 years of her career, retiring in 1991. While at Lincoln, Jean Ann taught Physical Education and coached swimming, volleyball, tennis, basketball, golf and track.

In 1977, she became one of the first female building athletic directors in the Portland Public Schools and continued in that role until 1981. In 1992, she was inducted into in the Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame for her service, and in 2022, the Lincoln alumni association named her to the school’s Hall of Honor.

Jean always was passionate about working with and mentoring students, especially those students who found it challenging to find their niche in school. She also found time to enjoy golfing, skiing, biking, fishing, field hockey, and scuba diving.

In 1965 she received her Master of Education degree from the Oregon State University and was married to Dr. George Harwood Cheshire in Gresham, Oregon.
