Johnny Ray Dahl

March 26, 1938 – June 28, 2025

Johnny Dahl, 87, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Johnny lived a life rooted in kindness, service, and unwavering dedication to those around him.

Born in Orlando, Oklahoma on March 26, 1938, he was the son of Herb and Opal Christine (Gouch) Dahl. He graduated from Perry high school in 1956 and continued his education with an engineering degree from Oklahoma State University.

He went on to become a respected highway engineer with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Over the course of his distinguished career, he worked across seven states, contributing to the safety and infrastructure of countless communities. He received the highest honor award given by the FHWA as one of the top civil engineers in the country—an acknowledgment of both his technical excellence and his commitment to public good.

Johnny and Willa Bea Hotson were married on Nov. 26, 1958 in Orlando, Oklahoma. They were married for 66 years, a testament to the enduring bond they shared. They were proud parents of three children, grandfather to nine, and great-grandfather to nine more – a legacy of love that continues to grow and thrive. He passed on his many interests, including woodworking, photography, hunting, gardening, and a deep love for the outdoors, to his children and now to his grandchildren.

In Topeka, Johnny made a lasting impact contributing to his community. As Scoutmaster for both Pack 7 and Troop 7, mentoring young people and instilling in them the values of leadership, responsibility, and service. After retiring, he continued to give back by teaching at Kansas University, sharing his knowledge and experience with those that took and retook his classes.

Known for his engaging personality, Johnny had a unique gift—he could walk into any room and soon befriend nearly everyone in it. He was always ready with a quick joke or a funny comment, bringing lightness and joy to even the simplest moments. His kindness, sense of humor, and generous spirit made him beloved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A private memorial service will be held. The family recommends that instead of flowers or gifts, memorials may be given to Tri-County Senior Center – PO Box 141 Covington, OK 73730.
