Vernon D. Best

– son of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Best, was born March 24, 1918 in Marshall, Oklahoma. He has attended school in Marshall, Maud, Lucien, Hayward and Perry, Okla.

While in school he has participated in Junior High and Senior High basketball and football.

Next year he expects to go to college, He intends to take to civil engineering, which is his special interest.

Vernon Dale Best

March 24, 1918 – July 11, 1943

Memorial service for S. Sgt. Vernon Best, United States Air Force who was killed in action July 11 in the North African theatre of war will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the First Christian church. Rev. J. Allen Wheeler will be in charge of the service.

Sergeant Best, born March 24, 1918, at Marshall, was the son of Luther Elvin and Maudie May (Shanks) Best, 117 Fir. Graduating from Perry high school in 1936, he entered the service December 30, 1941. Training at Sheppard Field, Texas, and a Long Island, N. Y., AAP school, he was sent overseas May 26, 1943.

He was married May 26, 1942, to Miss Helen Evangelistic of Flushing, N. Y.

Surviving are his parents; the widow; one brother, Bob, of Lyons, Kan,; three sisters, Mrs. Dennis Berry of Wichita, Kan., Mrs. Betty Robertson and Miss Eula Best. both of the home.
